Long before it carried the name of a Spanish kingdom, soapmakers in Aleppo were making hard soap from olive and laurel oils. Crusaders are thought to have carried it home to Europe around the 11th century, and soapmakers around the Mediterranean, without laurel to hand, began making it from olive oil alone.
So much of it was made in the lands of the Crown of Castile in Spain that the name stuck. By the 1500s, castile soap was being shipped across Europe and unloaded on London's docks.
Today "castile" means a gentle soap made from plant oils rather than animal fats. It's the same simple idea, centuries on, and it's the soap in every Chandler pump bottle.
How to use: one or two pumps onto wet hands, lather, rinse. Keep it by the basin or the kitchen sink.
Every soap has a hand-poured candle in the same scent. Buy both as a duo.
